This weekend I went to some excellent yard sales. There was a neighborhood sale going on at Legacy Parks off of Jiles rd. And Legacy Parks is much like a little city of neighborhoods. Neighborhood sales are excellent for there are so many sales going on in one location! The only problem that I have found with them is that they tend to have a lot of brightly colored plastic…kids’ stuff. If that is exactly what you are looking for then these sales would be perfect places to check out for inexpensive kids stuff.
The things I found at some of these sales were…A girl scout uniform for 5 dollars! And it is from the 1950’s! I also got a bowl, an ice cream maker ball (very cool. Instead of an electric one that you just flip a switch and the thing turns itself, this one you can roll and kick around! And only a dollar! I needed it…) and finally a bed (30 dollars and I got the above bowl for free!).

One of my favorite things to do now at yard sales is bargain. At first I wasn’t really up for it. I had so many fears. I didn’t want them to get mad at me. Though why they would get mad at me I am not really sure. It’s an issue I have that I really need to work on. But this is not set up for a discussion of things I should work on, except for yard sale bargaining maybe… Well anyway, I didn’t like it. One day I decided to finally try it out. I was with a friend of mine and she told me that I should ask for 2 dollars of this flower pot I wanted. She said that the worst thing that they could say was no. So I tentatively went up to the man and asked him if I could get the flower pot for 3 dollars instead of 5. I felt like backing down, but I didn’t. I held my ground and waited for his response. Which, after a brief pause, was yes! And now I am a changed woman. I haven’t perfected my bargaining style yet and I still get a little squeamish when someone mentions a larger price cut proposal, but I am learning; I am growing. I think I should suggest yardsaling (One word. The verb “to yardsale”) as a type of therapy. Everyone should try it. And you save so much money! A 30 dollar bed…honestly.
The bed I am very excited about. I have big plans for it. The design is quite simple with square edges and no intricate wood patterns. It is made out of pine I believe and stained some darkish color. I have decided I am going to paint it! But not just paint it, I am also going to make it look kind of distressed and old. I also have some pressed flowers that I think I am going to try and attach in some way. Not sure about the color and everything yet, but we shall see. It should be good. I think my next blog might actually cover the bed and the progress and success I hopefully make on it.
Ok so tip for the day….BARGAIN. You can make cheap things become even cheaper. No harm in asking. It’s good for you. You’ll grow as a human being. Trust me.
